Etymology

Romanian borrowed "electricitate" from French "électricité" in the 19th century, as the country modernized its scientific and technical vocabulary. The French word itself was built on modern Latin "electricus", a term coined by scientists from Greek "ēlektron", meaning amber. Amber was the substance in which static electric effects were first observed by rubbing it.
