Varză entered Romanian from a Slavic source during the long period of Slavic-Romanian contact in the early medieval Balkans, part of a large layer of everyday farming and food words Romanian absorbed from its Slavic neighbors. The root is likely tied to the Slavic verb for boiling or cooking, since cabbage was above all a vegetable meant for the pot. Romanian kept an older Latin-derived word for cabbage, curechi, in some regions, but varză became the standard term almost everywhere.
