Etymology
Înapoi is built from the prefix în- and the adverb apoi, meaning 'then' or 'afterward'. Apoi itself comes from the Latin phrase ad post, 'toward after'. The same în- + directional-word pattern also produced înainte, 'forward', so Romanian treats front and back as mirror constructions.
