Etymology
Viteză was formed inside Romanian from the adjective viteaz, meaning brave or valiant, which itself comes from a Slavic word for warrior or knight. Romanian speakers built the noun with the suffix -eză, echoing the shape of the French word vitesse. Over the nineteenth century the meaning drifted from valor toward the physical sense of speed, likely under the pull of that French model, while the native root stayed intact.
