Etymology
Romanian borrowed "a invita" in the nineteenth century from French "inviter", part of a broad effort to re-Latinize the vocabulary after centuries of Slavic and Ottoman influence. The word was reinforced by the Latin source verb "invitare", which is itself of disputed origin. Despite the visual similarity, most linguists do not connect it cleanly to "vita" (life). The same Latin root gave English "invite" and equivalents across the Romance languages.
