Etymology

Romanian took "fals" in the 19th century as part of a large wave of Latin-Romance borrowings meant to replace older Slavic and Greek vocabulary. The word draws on French "faux/fausse" and Italian "falso", both descending from Latin "falsus", the past participle of "fallere" (to deceive, to trip up). Modern Romanian keeps the word close to its Romance neighbors in both form and meaning.
