Etymology
Romanian borrowed "japonez" from French "japonais" in the 19th century, during a period when Romanian built up its modern vocabulary largely through French. The root goes back to the place name Japan, which entered European languages through Malay and Portuguese traders, ultimately reflecting a Chinese name for the islands. Romanian then fitted the word with its own native suffix "-ez", the same one used for other nationality words like "francez" and "englez".
