Etymology
Jenant was borrowed from French gênant, the present participle of gêner, meaning to bother or to embarrass. Romanian took in the whole family alongside the verb a jena (to embarrass) and the noun jenă (embarrassment, discomfort) during the wave of French borrowing in the 19th century. The word describes something that produces jenă in other people. There is no Indo-European root behind it, since French gêner itself traces back through Old French gehine (torment) to the place name Gehenna.
