Etymology

Uniune came into Romanian from French union during the nineteenth century, when Romanian scholars reshaped the language's vocabulary along Romance lines. The French word itself descends from Latin unio, unionem, a noun built on unus, meaning one. The Romanian ending -une reflects a common pattern for absorbing French words in -ion as abstract nouns.
