Menajeră was borrowed from French ménagère, meaning a woman who runs a household. Ménagère derives from ménage (household, housekeeping), which goes back to Latin mansio, a staying or dwelling place, from the verb manere, to remain or stay. Romanian absorbed the word in the 19th century, during a wave of French borrowings that reshaped its vocabulary for modern domestic and social life.
