Etymology
Romanian borrowed "mină" from French "mine" during the nineteenth century, when much of the modern Romanian vocabulary was rebuilt on French and Italian models. The French word itself goes back to Medieval Latin "mina", meaning a vein of ore or an underground gallery, a term of uncertain and possibly Celtic origin. The same French word also carried the sense of a person's facial expression, and Romanian inherited both meanings.
