The verb a găsi, from which găsit is formed, has a disputed origin. Romanian dictionaries mark it as etymologically unclear, unlike most core Romanian vocabulary, which descends directly from Latin. Some scholars have proposed a Cuman or other substrate source, but no consensus exists. Because of this uncertainty, găsit cannot be traced back to a reconstructed Proto-Indo-European root.
