Etymology

Romanian borrowed "lady" directly from English, most likely through television, tabloid press, and pop culture from the late twentieth century onward. The word entered as an unadapted loan and kept its English spelling and rough pronunciation. In English itself, "lady" descends from Old English hlæfdige, a compound of hlaf ("loaf") and a root tied to kneading, so the word originally meant something like "bread-kneader" or "mistress of the household."
