Etymology
Romanian borrowed "mită" from a South Slavic source, most likely Bulgarian "mito," which originally meant a toll or customs duty and later extended to an illicit payment. This puts the word outside the Latin core of Romanian vocabulary, alongside many other everyday terms that entered the language through centuries of contact with Slavic-speaking neighbors. The sense narrowed over time from a legitimate tax to specifically an unlawful payment made to corrupt an official.
