Etymology

Umanitate entered Romanian in the nineteenth century as part of a wave of French and Latin borrowings that modernized the language. It comes from Latin humanitas, humanitatis, itself built on humanus, meaning human. The word replaced or supplemented older, more Slavic-influenced vocabulary as Romanian scholars aligned the language with its Romance roots.
