Etymology
Uman is a learned borrowing, entering Romanian in the 19th century from French humain, itself from Latin humanus. It sits alongside the native word om (man, person), which descended directly and popularly from Latin homo. Humanus in Latin was built on homo and ultimately points back to a root meaning earth or earthling, the idea being that humans are creatures of the ground. Romanian ended up with two related words, om from ordinary spoken Latin and uman from a later, bookish reborrowing.
