Părinte descends from Latin parens, parentis, meaning parent or one who gives birth, itself from the verb parere, to bring forth. Romanian inherited the word directly from spoken Latin and kept its original sense of parent. This sets it apart from Italian parente and Spanish pariente, which drifted over time to mean simply relative. Romanian later extended părinte as a respectful title for priests and monks, much as English speakers say Father.
