Etymology

Pas comes from Latin passus, meaning step or pace, the past participle of pandere, to spread or stretch. Romanian inherited it directly from spoken Latin, along with the derived verb a păși, to walk or step. The same Latin root gave French pas, Italian passo, and, through French, the English word pace.
