Etymology
Monedă was borrowed into Romanian in the nineteenth century from French monnaie and Italian moneta, part of a wave of Latin-based vocabulary that modernized Romanian after centuries of Ottoman and Slavic influence. Both source words trace back to Latin moneta, meaning mint or coined money. That Latin word began as an epithet of the goddess Juno Moneta, near whose Roman temple coins were struck, and moneta itself comes from the verb monere, to warn or remind.
