Etymology
Romanian borrowed "egal" from French "égal" during the nineteenth-century push to modernize Romanian vocabulary along Romance lines. French "égal" descends from Latin "aequalis", meaning "equal, alike", which itself comes from "aequus", meaning "even, level, fair". The same Latin root gave English "equal" through Old French, so Romanian and English arrived at nearly identical words by separate routes.
