Etymology
Mulțime is built from the Romanian word mult, meaning much or many, which comes from Latin multus. The suffix -ime attaches to adjectives to form abstract or collective nouns, so mulțime literally means something like a state of manyness, a group defined by its large number. Latin multus itself goes back to a Proto-Indo-European root meaning much or many, which also gave Greek its word for very.
