Etymology
Aprinde comes from Latin apprehendere, a prefixed form of prehendere, meaning to seize or grasp. The prefix a- (from Latin ad-, toward) attaches to prinde, which itself descends from prehendere. The compound literally meant to catch onto something. Over time Romanian narrowed that sense to catching a flame, lighting a fire, or switching on a device.
