Etymology
Tină came into Romanian from a Slavic source, most likely Old Church Slavonic or an early South Slavic dialect that Romanian speakers were in close contact with. The word kept its core sense of wet, sticky mud or silt, and Romanian later built the verb a întina (to sully, to muddy) on the same root. Today tină survives mainly in literary and religious registers rather than everyday speech.
