Etymology
Mulțumim is the first-person plural present form of the verb a mulțumi, built on mult, the Romanian word for much, which continues Latin multus. Romanian formed the verb by adding a suffix to mult, so the word originally suggested making much of someone or satisfying them greatly, a sense still visible in the related adjective mulțumit, meaning content or satisfied. Over time the verb narrowed to its main modern use: to thank. The ending -im marks we in this class of Romanian verbs ending in -i, the same pattern seen in a dormi giving dormim, we sleep.
