Etymology
Romanian borrowed "angaja" from French "engager" in the 19th century, during a period when Romanian absorbed many French terms for modern administrative and commercial life. French "engager" itself comes from "gage", meaning a pledge or security deposited to guarantee a promise. The core sense, to bind oneself by a pledge, gave rise to both the modern meaning of hiring someone and the reflexive meaning of committing to an action.
