Etymology
Romanian borrowed "angajament" from French "engagement" during the nineteenth century, when a wave of French vocabulary reshaped Romanian in fields like law, politics, and business. The related verb "a angaja" (to hire, to commit oneself) comes from French "engager" the same way. French "engager" itself derives from a Germanic root meaning pledge or security, the same source that gives English "gage" and "wage".
