Etymology

Angajat is the past participle of the verb a angaja, meaning to hire or to commit someone to a job. Romanian borrowed the verb from French engager in the 19th century, during the wave of French-influenced modernization of Romanian vocabulary. French engager itself goes back to Old French gage, a pledge or security, rooted in a Germanic word for pledge. Over time angajat came to stand on its own as a noun for the person hired.
