Etymology

Romanian borrowed "dans" from French "danse" in the nineteenth century, during a period when Romanian intellectuals reshaped the language's vocabulary along French and Italian lines. French "danse" itself traces to Old French "dancier," a verb whose ultimate source is disputed but is often linked to Frankish Germanic speech rather than Latin. Because of this uncertain trail, no reliable Proto-Indo-European root can be assigned. The word entered Romanian as a ready-made noun rather than growing from native Latin stock.
