Etymology
Romanian "iad" was borrowed from Old Church Slavonic "адъ" (adŭ), meaning hell. That Slavonic word in turn came from Greek "Hades" (Ἅιδης), the name of the underworld and its god, which entered Christian Slavic texts as the standard word for the place of the damned. The word entered Romanian through the Slavic-language liturgy and administration that shaped early Romanian religious vocabulary.
