Pădure comes from the Latin word palus, paludis, which meant marsh or swamp. Over time in Romanian the meaning shifted from wet lowland to the wooded land that often covered it, ending up as the word for forest. The Italian cognate palude kept the older sense of marsh, which shows how far the Romanian meaning drifted.
