Etymology

Convinge comes from Latin convincere, a combination of con- (together, thoroughly) and vincere (to conquer, to defeat). The original sense was to defeat someone in an argument or in court, and this later softened to mean winning someone over to a belief. Romanian kept the verb through direct inheritance from Latin, alongside later reinforcement from French convaincre.
