Etymology

Scăpa comes from Vulgar Latin excappare, built from ex- ("out of") and cappa ("cloak, hood"). The underlying image is of slipping out of one's cloak to break free of a pursuer's grip, leaving the garment behind. The same Vulgar Latin verb, by different paths, gave Italian scappare, French échapper, and English escape.
