Etymology

Medical entered Romanian from French médical, which in turn came from Late Latin medicalis, an adjective built on medicus, meaning physician. Medicus itself derives from the verb mederi, to heal or to take care of. Romanian absorbed the word during its nineteenth-century wave of French and Latin borrowings, when much of its modern scientific and administrative vocabulary was formed.
