Etymology
Ticălos is not a Latin inheritance. Romanian etymological dictionaries trace it to a South Slavic source, close to Bulgarian tikav, which meant weak or paltry. Romanian added the native adjectival suffix -os, the same ending seen in frumos or curajos, to form a word for someone marked by wretchedness. Over centuries the sense hardened from pitiable and poor to morally vile.
