Etymology

Sufragerie is built on sufragiu, an older Romanian word for a household or church attendant who served at table, a word linked to Latin suffragium. The suffix -erie, borrowed through French in words like brutărie (bakery) and bijuterie (jewelry shop), turns a root into a place name: the room where the serving happens. Romanian towns adopted the word as urban homes began setting aside a separate room for dining, on the French model. Today the word names both that room and, in everyday speech, the matching furniture set bought to fill it.
