Etymology
Romanian "idol" entered the language as a modern borrowing from French "idole", part of the wave of French and Latin-based vocabulary that reshaped Romanian in the 19th century. French "idole" in turn goes back to Latin "idolum" and Greek "eídōlon", meaning image or phantom. The Greek word is built on "eidos", meaning form or shape.
