Etymology
Romanian borrowed inch directly from English, mostly through twentieth-century technical and computing vocabulary, to name the imperial unit of length equal to 2.54 centimeters. English inch descends from Old English ynce, itself borrowed from Latin uncia, meaning a twelfth part. That same Latin root also gave Romanian its older word uncie, a unit once used for a twelfth of a pound, so inch and uncie are distant cousins that entered the language by different routes, centuries apart.
