Etymology
Câștiga descends from Old Church Slavonic kostignati/kostigati, a verb meaning to chastise or subdue. That Slavic verb was itself borrowed from Latin castigare, to punish or correct. Over time in Romanian the sense shifted from punishing or forcing submission to overpowering an opponent, and finally to winning or earning. The result is that câștigăm shares deep roots with the English word castigate, though the two now mean opposite things.
