The word is built from the negative prefix ne- attached to răbdător, the adjective form of the verb a răbda, "to endure" or "to be patient." Romanian dictionaries trace a răbda to a Slavic source connected to rabota, meaning servitude or hard labor, the same root that gave Romanian rob ("slave") and robot. So a word rooted in forced endurance became, through Latin's agentive suffix -tor, the ordinary word for patience, and its negation became the word for impatience.
