Etymology

Nivel entered Romanian from French niveau during the nineteenth-century modernization of the language. French niveau descends from Old French nivel, which traces back to Vulgar Latin libella, a diminutive of libra, meaning scale or balance. English level comes from the same Latin root through a related Old French variant, livel, so nivel and level are distant cognates rather than a coincidence of sound.
