Etymology

Romanian borrowed "orbită" from French "orbite" in the nineteenth century, as astronomy and anatomy became standardized fields of study. The French word itself comes from Latin "orbita", meaning a wheel track or rut, which in turn derives from "orbis", meaning circle or ring. The sense shifted from a literal groove worn by a wheel to the curved path a body traces, and later to the bony socket that holds the eye.
