Romanian borrowed "oribil" from French "horrible" during the nineteenth century, a period when Romanian absorbed many French and Italian words to rebuild its Latin character. The French word goes back to Latin "horribilis", from the verb "horrere", meaning to bristle or shudder with fear. Romanian dropped the initial "h" in both spelling and pronunciation, as it did with several other French loans.
