Etymology

Promisiune entered Romanian in the nineteenth century as a learned borrowing, part of the deliberate re-Latinization of Romanian vocabulary through French. It traces to Latin promissio, promissionem, the noun form of promittere, built from pro- (forth) and mittere (to send). The everyday Romanian verb a promite, inherited directly from Latin, existed earlier; promisiune was added later as the formal noun for the act of promising.
