Etymology
Fantomă entered Romanian from French fantôme in the 19th century, during the period when Romanian intellectuals borrowed heavily from French to modernize the language. French fantôme itself descends from Greek phantasma, meaning an appearance or vision, through Late Latin. The word replaced or sat alongside older Romanian terms for spirits of the dead.
