Etymology
Târziu comes from the Latin adverb tardivum, built on tardus, meaning slow. Romanian inherited it directly from spoken Latin, so the word has been in continuous use since the language's formation rather than being a later borrowing. The same Latin root also gave Romanian the separate, more formal word tardiv through a later learned borrowing.
