Etymology

Romanian borrowed pașaport from French passeport, a compound of passe (from passer, to pass) and port (harbor, gate). The word entered Romanian in the 19th century along with other French administrative terms, replacing older Ottoman-influenced travel documents. The port element ultimately goes back to Latin portare, to carry.
