Etymology

Romanian borrowed "protocol" from French "protocole" in the 19th century, during the wave of Latin-Romance modernization of the language. The French word goes back to Medieval Latin "protocollum", itself from Greek "prōtokollon". In Byzantine administrative practice, this was literally the first sheet glued to a papyrus roll, stating the document's date and origin to guard against forgery. From that narrow notarial sense the word widened to cover any official record, and later any set of formal rules.
