Etymology
Romanian borrowed "pardon" directly from French in the 19th century, during the period when Romanian elites reshaped the language with French vocabulary. The French word comes from the verb "pardonner", built from the Latin prefix per- (thoroughly) and donare (to give). The original sense is close to "to give fully", which came to mean forgiving someone completely.
