Etymology
Romanian borrowed condamna from French condamner, reinforced by Italian condannare, both descending from Latin condemnare. The Latin verb joins the prefix com- with damnare, meaning to inflict loss or judge guilty. The word entered Romanian during the nineteenth century as part of a wave of French and Italian legal and administrative vocabulary.
