Etymology
Legendă entered Romanian through French légende, which itself came from Medieval Latin legenda. Legenda was the neuter plural gerundive of legere, to read, and originally meant things that must be read, referring to the lives of saints read aloud in church. The sense broadened over centuries from a fixed religious text to any traditional story of doubtful historical truth.
